I should warn (because I know someone who was so disappointed by that, she couldn't get into the series) that "revolutionary" should be taken more as something existential than the more common social meaning in this case.
I prefer subtitles in general, but I honestly haven't heard the Utena dub, so I can't say anything about its virtues. It's definitely a series that should be watched in order.
